My Vintage Singer

Maine women are resourceful.  My grandmother always made the children two pairs of mittens each winter.  She could not knit but she could sew.  She used my great grandmother’s treadle, a 1910 Singer purchased for $19 from the Sears and Roebuck catalog. The mittens were made from sweaters, Grampie’s flannel shirts and lined with the children’s outgrown flannel nightshirts and T-shirts.

Today, the tradition continues but now with electric sewing machines and wonderful, colorful warm sweaters from L.L. Bean, Susan Bristol, Brooks Brothers, Talbots and other fine lines.   We now return to recycling, just as our grandparents reused and repurposed items.

Certainly, there was no waste.  Old clothing was made into quilts, used as rags and buttons were removed and saved to the button tin.

Maine Coast Mittens are “upcycled” which means to convert older or unused products into something of better quality or higher environmental value.

I really enjoy making mittens with a unique fanciful flair in the tradition of my grandmother.

I hope you enjoy wearing your mittens as much as I enjoy
making them.
